Facing what many felt was a must-win situation in a South Wales Cricket Association Division One relegation clash, Llandysul produced the goods when it mattered in coming out on top by seven wickets against Merthyr Tydfil at Hills Plymouth.

A 26-point haul saw the Teifisiders move out of the relegation zone eight points above Merthyr with two games remaining.

Llandysul host leaders Llanelli this Saturday before ending the season at Cowbridge while Merthyr are away against fifth in the table Gorseinon in their penultimate game and host third-placed Bronwydd on the final day – bottom of the pile Briton Ferry Steel are all but doomed.

After being put in by home skipper Andrew Edwards the visitors made good progress as George Murphy (21) and Liam Davies (44) shared an opening stand of 55.

Andrew Murphy at number four went after the bowling as he plundered 68 runs off 42 balls, including seven fours and three sixes.

Blaine Harries at number six contributed a useful 25 as Merthyr were all out for 223 in 49.5overs.

Ieuan Paske, Rhydian Harries, Ian Marsh and Mike Turner took two wickets apiece.

As Llandysul replied skipper Andrew Edwards was the shining star, producing fluent shots all round the wicket in an innings of 109 which included ten boundaries and with fellow opener Ieuan Paske (36) put on 68.

Wicket keeper Llewellyn Hughes at number four also wielded the willow in an innings of 58 which included six fours and two sixes as the Teifisiders reached the target for the loss of three wickets in 46.3 overs.
