Llechryd Cricket Club stalwart Laurence Harris has notched a few
centuries during the best part of 60 years involvement in the game but surely none of them will have given him more satisfaction than an unbeaten innings for Wales Over 70s against their Somerset counterparts at Sudbrook near Caldicot.
The Over 70s side play in a UK league system against counties in the west of England and there is invariably keen competition.
With Wales tottering on 14-2 in the fourth over. Laurence, who is in his70th year, strode to the middle and began wielding the willow.
He and Rod Howe shared in a third wicket stand of 197, the latter
making an unbeaten 68 and Laurence 108 not out.
Remarkably, after reaching his half century with a cover drive the
Llechryd club president pulled a hamstring and had to employ a runner. But that did not deter him and he went on to reach his century.
Another Llechryd member, Leighton O'Connor, helped Wales Over 50s gain a narrow victory over Australia Over 50s, the local bowler taking two wickets.
A third player from the club, Peter Betterley, has been selected to take part in trials for the England Over 70s squad tour to Australia next spring.
