Midfielder Tomos Toft carried off the top prize at the Cardigan FC Annual Dinner and Presentation Awards which were held recently at Cardigan Golf Club.

Teenager Toft was the stand-out player in a side that fell upon difficult times, especially early in the season following an exodus of players.

The Magpies who were league champions for two years on the trot eventually finished in fifth place in Division 1 and this was a decent return as they were forced to rely on a clutch of young and inexperienced players who were thrown in to the deep end alongside a few old stalwarts.

The Magpies played some decent football and got better as the season progressed and the club is confident they have the makings of another good team in a few years.

Toft, who was chosen as the club’s player of the year, is a talented playmaker with quick feet and he can pass the ball very accurately and he has matured this season and has the potential to be a very good player at this level.

There were several players who put their hands up for the award including skipper Iestyn Evans and fellow defenders Joost Burki and old warhorse Steve Blackford as well as midfielder Emlyn George and striker Ewan Jones.

It was George who was chosen as the players' player of the year, and the young player of the year was awarded to Tom Gardener and he is a promising footballer who can cover a number of positions and whose confidence has grown over the last year.

Another to have blossomed after a run of games in the first team has been front runner Josh Mellor and he was a popular choice as the most improved player of the year.

Main striker Ewan Jones was the top scorer of the year and team manager Ceri Adams-Lewis was the clubman of the year.

Cardigan have continued with training over the summer months to help retain and encourage new players to join and sessions are held on Tuesday nights on King George VI playing fields at 7pm and a warm welcome is extended to all existing and new players.

For the season 2017-18 Cardigan Town FC are hoping to field a Reserves Team once again.
