A five-wicket win at fellow strugglers Briton Ferry Steel gave Llandysul renewed hope of avoiding relegation in Division One of the South Wales Cricket Association.

Although still bottom of the pile, the Teifisiders moved to within 17 points of safety after picking up 25 points – it appears that the relegation scrap involves Llandysul, Merthyr Tydfil and Briton Ferry Steel with two of them taking the dreaded drop.

A first taste of success at the tenth attempt could act as a morale-booster for Llandysul who will attempt to complete back-to-back successes this Saturday when fourth from bottom Dafen visit Tir-Dref.

Put in by visiting skipper Andrew Edwards the homesters made good progress with opener Jason Hughes hitting eight fours in his 45 before Edwards snapped him up off Costcutter League footballer Iestyn Evans.

Luke O'Connor wielded the willow in a fine innings of 60, which included seven fours and a towering six and there were valuable contributions from Gareth Davies (31), Andrew Collins (38) and Craig Evans at number six who was unbeaten on 35 as the home side posted 240-8 in 50 overs.

Colin Tucker returned figures of 3-29 in nine overs while there were two wickets apiece for Ian Marsh and Iestyn Evans and one for Rhydian Harries.

As the Teifisiders chased down the total openers Ieuan Paske (22), skipper Edwards (33) and first wicket down Ben Edkins (21) kept the runs flowing while Llewellyn Hughes stroked eleven boundaries in his 65.

But it was former Wales Youth and Ammanford batsman Rhydian Harries who set the scene alight with a classy innings as he hit ten fours in an unbeaten match-winning knock of 71.

The wickets were shared between five bowlers.
