ANYONE for croquet with a new club set to be formed in Cardigan?

The club, affiliated to the Croquet Association, will be based at the Cliff Hotel, Gwbert, playing on the lawn in front of the restaurant with its magnificent view across the golf course and the Teifi Estuary.

There will be a meeting at the Cliff on Wednesday, June 7 at 2pm when anyone interested is invited - men/women/all ages/beginners to experienced - to formalise the club and to find out the best time to play.

There will be an official launch on Wednesday, June 21 from 1.30pm-3.30pm when there will be a demonstration and invitation to join in with John Evans, Welsh International and National Champion and members of the Llandovery Croquet Club.

Cardigan has an important tradition of playing croquet in the early 1900s. There was a croquet lawn at the Castle in the 1920s and at Hammet House in Llechryd, the former home of Lily Gower (1877-1959) , ancestor of England cricketer David Gower.

Lily was four times winner of the British Women’s Championship and one of only three women who won the Open Championship , doing so in 1905 She served on the council of the Croquet Association from 1939-1954.

If you are not able to attend on June 7 but interested in joining, contact Kathleen Martin on 07786 568253 or 01239 614838.
