THE Gogerddan Raiders were triumphant at the annual Newport 7s Barbarians competition on Bank Holiday Sunday.

Following a long but enjoyable day of matches, the Raiders edged out the Carmarthen Warriors by four tries to three in a tense final, to claim the Glyn and Penny Rees Memorial Cup.

Their victory earned them the main prize of £300, with the Warriors going home with £225.

In the Plate final, the Cardigan Exiles took the £125 prize after overcoming the Neyland Old Blacks 6-2.

The player of the tournament award, and £100, went to Rhodri Wall of the Raiders.

Overall, nine teams took part – and alongside the cup and plate finalists were hosts Newport, Hungry Hogs (Llangwm), St Davids, Fishguard, and Whitland.

Newport RFC club members, led by Gary Davies, kept things going throughout the day and ensured each side played a minimum of four matches – and a large crowd were able to appreciate another successful tournament.

Refereeing duties were shared between John Griffiths, Colin Phillips, David Byrne, Shaun Edwards and Eirian Edwards.
