Ambitious Newcastle Emlyn of the Costcutter League face an anxious wait to learn if they are successful in a bid to play senior football next season.

The Reds have applied for membership of the Spar Mid Wales League Division Two and one of the conditions for acceptance is that they finish top or runners-up in the Costcutter.

With Llandysul having been crowned champions Emlyn hope to gain entry by taking second spot, but a 1-0 midweek defeat at St Dogmaels has made matters more difficult.

As it stands the Teifisiders are three points ahead of joint second Lampeter Town and Crannog with one game remaining – at home against Crannog – while the coastal villagers also have a home game against Dewi Stars.

Lampeter could also do the business with wins over Cardigan Town at North Road and against St Dogmaels at School Field.

Spar Mid Wales League secretary Phil Woosnam confirmed that Emlyn had applied to join the league next term and also the stipulation concerning finishing in the top two.

"Even if Newcastle Emlyn do not qualify through first or second positions they could still come in if there is a vacancy and it is possible that will be the case," he said.

The Spar annual general meeting is being held at Llanidloes Golf Club on Monday, June 19, when Emlyn will learn their fate.
