FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

After nearly folding prior to the start of the season and struggling throughout the campaign New Quay got their act together on Saturday in fighting for Costcutter League Division One survival.

Three days after a 13-0 thumping at St Dogmaels, the Seasiders pulled out the stops in notching a 2-1 away win over Aberaeron Reserves.

Aaron McCarthy and Glen Baldwin were the Quay goal heroes and Gareth Severs replied for the Black and Ambers.

Bargod Rangers have been relegated and will be accompanied in the drop by either New Quay or Felinfach with the former currently two points ahead of their rivals.

The Seasiders play their final game tomorrow (Wednesday) when hosting Crannog and the Milkmen are at home against doomed Bargod.

Felinfach have three games after tomorrow in which to secure safety.

The race for the runners-up spot behind champions Llandysul involves three clubs with Lampeter Town and Newcastle Emlyn in joint second ahead of Crannog.

A 3-0 win at Felinfach raised the hopes of Lampeter while Crannog also came into contention after a 5-0 win over visitors Cardigan Town but Emlyn slipped up in going down 2-0 against Dewi Stars at Llanddewi Brefi.

Emlyn lifted the League Cup at Aberaeron on Easter Monday when springing a 2-1 win over holders Crannog who now concentrate on the final of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies when they take on Felinfach on Monday.

It was the fifteenth time for the Reds to win the coveted trophy – the last time was in season 1998-99 – and they have been runners-up nine times.

The coastal villagers, who have been successful in the competition on two occasions, gave it their best shot and matched their opponents in most departments but goals from Sam Skinner and Huw Jones against one by Owen Thomas was sufficient to carry the day.
