Football round-up

SEVEN days after wet conditions caused postponements involving Costcutter League clubs frozen pitches were the problem last Saturday as a spate of league and cup games were called off including the J Emrys Morgan Cup local derby tie between Pencader and Llandysul and Berriew Reserves versus Cardigan Town.

One of the few games to escape the freeze was at Parc Y Dre in Cilgerran where the Coraclemen were sunk 4-1 by second in the league Lampeter Town.

Few would give the mid county side a chance of overhauling runaway leaders Llandysul, but Lampeter under shrewd manager Terry Jones will not give an inch and in addition to the championship are involved in cup competitions.

It was all over bar the shouting at half time in the north Pembrokeshire village as the visitors led 3-0 with goals by Robert Slawkowski, and two strikes by Luke Lovell.

John Williams netted for the homesters after the break but Slawkowski netted a fourth to make it plain sailing for Lampeter.

In a one-sided Division Two encounter leaders Maesglas buried visitors St David's University College Lampeter under a 12 goal avalanche at Maes Radley where Billy Myers led the home goal rush with four strikes.

Felinfach are the first Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies semi-finalists after a hard-earned 1-0 home win over visiting Aberporth of Division Two.

James Davies was on target for the Aeron Valley side.

The quarter-finals of the centrepiece competition the Easter Monday League Cup take place this Saturday with holders Crannog visiting Division One leaders Llandysul.

Many will plump for the league high-flyers reaching the penultimate stage and perhaps going on to lift the trophy for only the second time in their history – their last success was in season 1979-80.

But it could prove imprudent to write off the chances of the coastal villagers who are already through to the last eight of the J Emrys Morgan Cup and inflicted the only defeat to date on Llandysul when emerging 3-2 winners in round two of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies at Llangrannog in November.

Winners two seasons ago Cardigan Town with a number of youngsters emerging will be fancied to overcome Felinfach at King George V Playing Field. The Milkmen have been runners-up twice but never got their hands on the trophy.

St Dogmaels have lifted the cup on five occasions, the last in season 2011-12 but will probably have to pull out the stops at School Field if they are to lower the colours of winners four years ago Lampeter Town, currently second in the league.

Renowned cup fighters Ffostrasol now in the Second Division will be hoping to cause an upset against Division One high-flyers Newcastle Emlyn at Troed-y-rhiw Park but Wanderers will likely have to produce something a bit special to halt the march of the Reds who have captured the silverware 14 times – more than any other club.
