FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

FOR just about the only time this season games involving Costcutter League clubs were hit by the weather with a number of postponements.

Five local clubs through to round four of the J Emrys Morgan Cup hoped to reach the quarter-final stage but in the event only the game at Llangrannog went ahead with Crannog becoming the first to reach the last eight after a 5-0 win over Shropshire village club Newcastle.

As the coastal villagers turned on the style attacking bright spark George Colven took his goal tally in all competitions to 19 while Gary Davies bagged a brace to take his total to nine and the other marksmen were Chris Welch and Rhydian Roberts.

The local derby tie between Pencader of Division Two and First Division leaders Llandysul, the games between Berriew Reserves and Cardigan Town and the tie involving Caersws Reserves and Dewi Stars were postponed and have been rearranged for this Saturday.

With runaway Division One leaders Llandysul forced to kick their heels, second in the table Newcastle Emlyn closed the gap through a 6-1 win over basement boys Bargod Rangers who are all but doomed.

But despite comfortably picking up maximum points at the expense of their neighbours, Emlyn have very little chance of ousting the Swallows who appear home and dry in the title race.

Leading marksman Peter Almond stole the limelight again for the Reds with a superb hat-trick and the other scorers were Mathew Goodman, Daniel Davies and Ben Thomas with Jake Kelly replying for the homesters.

Lampeter Town also appear to have little chance of overhauling the pacesetters, but Terry Jones's charges stayed in contention for the runners-up spot after a 6-0 win over New Quay at North Road.

St Dogmaels continued their improvement with a 5-0 win against Aberaeron Reserves at School Field where Saints have returned after a few weeks absence due to problems in relation to a wall bordering the pitch.

The Greens led by a solitary goal at the interval, the breakthrough coming via skipper and central defender Jason Williams who headed home at a corner.

During the second half Marcus Dean netted twice and the other goals came via Chris Jones and Rhys Jones.
