THE looks of stunned disbelief on the faces of Newcastle Emlyn players at the end of an exciting Championship clash with fourth-placed Beddau at Dol Wyber said it all as the Red and Whites conceded an injury time converted try and slumped to an 18-15 defeat.

A last gasp score was a cruel blow for the Teifisiders who just failed to avenge a 69-3 defeat at the hands of their rivals in Rhondda Cynon Taf earlier in the season.

Stand-in skipper and prop Emrys Davies and team-mates led 15-0 after the opening 40 minutes but were put under severe pressure during the second period when Beddau took control.

Emlyn went ahead through a try by scrum-half Dafydd Evans following good work by No. 8 Brynmor Jones and despite two opportunities to increase the advantage from straightforward penalties the homesters opted for scrums, decisions which in the final analysis proved costly.

Midway through the half impressive fullback Shaun Leonard put winger Daniel Davies away for a try which he converted and the same player extended the lead with a penalty.

The visitors exerted pressure from the start of the second period and reduced the deficit with a penalty by outside half Hywel Chatham before getting right back into contention when winger Joe Casella went over for an unconverted try.

When the visitors were awarded a penalty deep in the Emlyn 22 with Emlyn down to 13 men after the sin-binning of flanker Gareth Patterson and Llyr Jones winger Cody Baker crossed for a try.

In injury time centre Tyler Wells broke through the home defence for a winning try to leave most of those at Dol Wyber feeling flat.

Hopes of an early Crymych surge early in the second half of the season in League 1 West evaporated during the first game as the Preselimen turned in a lacklustre performance and were beaten 29-3 at Waunarlwydd.

The homesters avenged a 9-8 defeat in north Pembrokeshire at the start of the season and with a little more steadiness at vital moments could have won by a wider margin.

Waun led 22-3 after the opening 40 minutes, their points coming from tries by prop Dai George, centre Dan Fox and fullback Ricky James, with scrum-half Lee Evans converting two of the scores and landing a penalty. Jake Jenkins landed a penalty for the visitors.

After the break No. 8 James Clearey got a fourth try for the homesters to earn them a bonus point and the score was converted by Evans.

Cardigan put themselves in exactly the right frame of mind for this weekend's National Bowl clash with Denbigh at King George V Playing Field with a 95-0 away win over bottom of the pile St Davids in League 3 West A.

In two league encounters with Saints the Cardis have scored 161 points.

Skipper and No. 8 Llyr Griffiths, centre Emyr Harries and fullback Rhydian Jenkins got try hat-tricks, centre Markus Castle crossed for two scores and the other try scorers were scrum-half Llyr Jones and replacements Tomos Evans, Aled Phillips and Owain Rees with outside half Iestyn Crompton landing ten conversions.
