IT WAS a satisfactory day for the Costcutter League in round one of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies with eight clubs reaching the next stage, four falling by the wayside and holders Cardigan Town and Newcastle Emlyn scheduled for ties this Saturday.

Pride of place surely went to Pencader of Division Two who faced a tough away tie against Cambrian Tyres League Division One third-placed Bow Street Reserves.

If the Carmarthenshire villagers faced a stern test beforehand they had a mountain to climb after the opening 45 minutes when trailing the northern high-flyers by two goals.

But the Reds refused to throw in the towel and produced a second half performance brimming with pride and passion as the homesters were forced to defend in numbers.

The visitors switched midfielder Sam Jones up front during the second period and the move worked a treat as he blasted two goals and regular striker Ashley Summers got a third to give the underdogs a memorable victory.

Another second division side Aberporth also did the league proud by notching a deserved 5-2 away win over Machynlleth Reserves.

As the Airmen did the business with a battling performance there were goals for Johnny Kinsella who netted twice, Chris Jones and Dan Davies and a hard-pressed home defender put through his own goal.

Last season's Division Two champions and runners-up Cilgerran Rovers and Dewi Stars clashed in the north Pembrokeshire village where the Coraclemen turned on the style in securing a 6-3 win.

The north Ceredigion visitors were in contention throughout the first half when sharing four goals but were outplayed after the break.

Midfielders Johnny Williams and skipper Gary Evans bagged a brace of goals apiece and the other marksmen were strikers Oliver Evans and Dan Bellis.

Although the visitors gave it their best shot and were in the game right up to the final whistle they went down 3-2 against the rejuvenated Saints.

It was a fine all-round team performance by the Teifi Estuary villagers who netted twice through Chris Jones and Marcus Dean before impressive striker Rhys Jones was brought down inside the penalty area and he promptly got to his feet and made no mistake with the spot kick.

Elsewhere Crannog buried visitors Llanon under a goal avalanche at the Urdd Centre, on song Lampeter Town handed out a six-of-the-best caning to Penrhyncoch Reserves in the north of the county while Division One leaders Llandysul sprang a 4-0 win at Tregaron.

On the league front Division One champions Cardigan Town were forced to pull out all the stops before scraping a 1-0 away win against Aberaeron Reserves.

It is clear that the Magpies are not the force they were over the previous two terms when plundering a large haul of silverware, but there are a number of young players coming through who are eager to wear the shirt which augurs well for the future.

Three of these, all aged 16, defender Sam Everton, winger Johnny Rees and substitute midfielder Jack Miller showed their undoubted potential.

A young Aeron outfit competed well and although having to give best on the day showed that there could well be better times ahead.

Influential midfielder and skipper Iestyn Evans, a former Wales junior international, netted the all-important goal just before half time when curling a free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.
