IF IT'S exciting open rugby, an abundance of tries and the result in doubt right up to the final whistle that tickles your fancy then the Memorial Ground in Ely, Cardiff was the place to be on Saturday as Newcastle Emlyn sprang a magnificent 35-30 win over Glamorgan Wanderers in the Championship.

The Red and Whites started the game on fire, leading by 16 points midway through the first half, were pegged back and trailed by eight points in the second period before turning things around to secure victory and five points.

Impressive outside half Luke Fish put Wanderers ahead early on with a penalty but Emlyn hit back to dominate proceedings for a lengthy period.

Wanderers were forced to defend desperately as the visitors mounted waves of attacks with forwards and backs combining.

The first try was something to savour as the ball was moved through several pairs of hands before right-winger Llyr Jones went over in the corner and outside half Nico Setaro converted with a superb kick from the touchline.

Soon afterwards Emlyn scrum half Mike Jones darted down the blindside and went over for an unconverted try.

Fish kicked his second penalty from 40 metres before the Red and Whites got a third try from a breakdown in the home midfield.

Llyr Jones kicked ahead and won the race to the corner for a try that went unconverted.

A fourth Emlyn try which earned a bonus point came from more exciting open play and ended with left-winger John Lumb crossing on his debut.

Fish landed a third penalty and on the stroke of half time the outside half forced his way over for a try from a five-yard scrum and he converted to make it 16-22 at the interval.

Wanderers dominated the early exchanges after the oranges and following a bout of inter-passing replacement flanker Curtis Hicks went in for a try converted by Fish to nudge the Cardiffians ahead.

Further superb passing by the homesters resulted in Fish scything through the visitors' defence for a try under the posts and he added the extras to give Wanderers an eight point advantage.

Leonard landed a long range penalty that reduced the deficit but the Teifisiders were forced to make a number of positional changes during the final quarter after losing dynamic flanker Brynmor Jones with a shoulder injury.

Despite being put under pressure Emlyn hit back with a fine move that ended in a Wanderers player tackling Nico Setaro without the ball and conceding a penalty try - Setaro converted and soon afterwards Leonard landed a penalty from halfway.

Emlyn defended heroically in the dying moments to gain a memorable victory.
