COSTCUTTER League champions Cardigan Town and runners-up Lampeter Town were defeated on the opening day but last season's top two bounced back with two wins apiece in the space of four days.

The champs doubled up on a midweek mauling of Crannog with a 4-1 win over promoted Dewi Stars at King George V Playing Field.

The highlight of an entertaining encounter was one of the best goals seen at the ground for many years sprung by Cardigan's veteran sweeper Steve 'Blackie' Blackmore. With Town having come back from a goal behind to take the lead the 42-year-old classy defender launched a counter attack from inside his own penalty area midway through the second period.

After working a clever one-two with substitute midfielder James Evans who did not arrive at the game until the interval, Blackford unleashed a 28-yarder that flew into the top corner of the net.

Afterwards the popular Blackford said: "I haven't scored a goal like that in my entire career and I don't think I'll ever do it again. You could say I was a bit over the moon."

Stars went ahead early on when Town goalkeeper Carl Woodhouse inadvertently rolled the ball out to visiting attacker John Jones who had the simplest of tasks in tapping home.

Former St Dogmaels favourite Lee Burrows who appears to be on fire for the Magpies squared matters with a clinical piece of finishing and before the break Iwan Jones showed shades of Wales striker Hal Robson-Kanu in turning on a sixpence inside the penalty area and picking his spot.

Eyebrows were raised at league watering holes as the result filtered through from Lampeter's North Road where Town brushed aside St Dogmaels 9-3.

The Saints could muster only 12 players to visit the mid county club and although battling hard and recovering from a two goal deficit to draw level ended on the wrong end of a big scoreline.

Powerful and speedy front-runner Gethin Hunter was the Lampeter scoring hero as he struck four times with fellow striker Luke Lovell bagging a brace and Arwel Thomas, Gethin Davies and Jason Jones also getting their names on the scoresheet.

Team of the moment Llandysul sit on top of the league after completing a win hat-trick in handing out a six-of-the-best caning to Aberaeron Reserves on their opponents' own stamping ground.

It was nip and tuck during the opening 45 minutes after which the Teifisiders led by a solitary goal struck by Mathew Newbold.

The pacesetters took control after the break, playing some delightful one touch stuff and it was no great surprise that they pulled away with a further five goals.

Stylish midfielder Adrian Hazelby gave the visitors breathing space when cutting inside and unleashing a tremendous 30-yard effort that whistled into the top corner.

As Llandysul controlled matters further goals followed via lightning fast striker Simon Davies, Ben Thomas, Dean Thomas (penalty) and Scott

Thomas.

There was a controversial incident at Parc Arthur in New Quay where the Seasiders shared the points after a 1-1 draw against promoted Cilgerran Rovers.

During the second half referee Eirian Morgan showed the red card to Rovers manager Neil Morgan for allegedly showing dissent on the touchline.

But afterwards several visiting players and supporters were of the view that the official had over-reacted and the Rovers boss was merely stating his opinion and not offensive in any way.

It also ended 1-1 between Crannog and Newcastle Emlyn at the Urdd Centre where vastly experienced Huw Reed was on target for the coastal side and Dafydd Owen netted for the Reds.
