A remarkable run of seven straight wins in less than three weeks gave Cardigan Town the Costcutter League Division One Championship to add to Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies.

During four hectic days the Magpies beat Bargod Rangers and Llandysul before lifting the coveted league silverware for the second season in succession after coming from behind to spring a thrilling 3-2 win over Lampeter Town in a title showdown on Saturday.

Cardigan went into the biggest game staged at King George V Playing Field for many seasons needing a point to retain the title while their mid county opponents required all three.

Despite playing three times a week since the start of April the season continues for Steve Blackford and Co when they visit Felinfach tomorrow in round two of the Bay Cup.

Although the club was not commenting on the extra competition that could involve the Magpies in four games in just over a week many followers at the league finale felt it was unnecessary.

A staunch supporter told the Tivy-Side “The players are absolutely shattered and can be forgiven for not looking forward with enthusiasm to Wednesday’s game at Felinfach.

“Don’t be surprised if there is an upset,” he said.

After leading his charges to another triumph manager Seamus Doherty said “The lads have shown great character in overcoming what has been a very demanding end of season and I’d like to say a big thank you to them and everyone who has supported us throughout the campaign.”

Sportingly congratulating his opposite number Lampeter boss Terry Jones said “We gave it our best shot and it was a cracking match. You can’t take it away from Cardigan – they have had another great season.”

The final day shootout which attracted a crowd of several hundred was a real thriller and a credit to both teams.

Lampeter went ahead twice but were pegged back and eventually beaten by opponents who on the evidence of the 90 minutes just about deserved to win.

Sweeper and skipper Steve Blackford nearly put the Magpies ahead in the opening quarter but was denied by Heulyn Jones who pulled off a brilliant stop.

The visitors took full advantage of the let-off by taking the lead through right-winger Gethin Davies whose 25-yard blaster gave Casey Walters no chance whatsoever.

Early in the second half the Cardis were awarded a penalty when Slawomir Slovak Waleczeck was brought down but midfielder James Evans sliced his stab at the target from 12 yards.

Shortly afterwards the homesters were given a second penalty and this time Iestyn Evans stepped up and fired low into the corner giving Jones no chance.

As the game swung from end to end it was Lampeter who struck again this time Luke Lovell in exactly the right spot to poke the ball home.

Again the reigning champions showed just what they are made of when Dylan Davies netted with a cracking header and the homesters wrapped up the game and title when teenage front-runners Liam Doherty and substitute Tomos Toft tore the Lampeter defence apart with some neat inter-passing culminating in Doherty showing his class with a thunderous 20-yard strike.
