LLANYBYDDER boxer Carwyn Herbert picked up the second victory of his fledgling pro career at Newport's Pillgwenlly Millennium Centre earlier this month.

The 27-year-old Nottingham-based super-welterweight took on former Midlands Area champion Matt Scriven, a veteran of over 100 fights.

In the first round both combatants were cagey and tentative with the former Cardigan ABC boxer stealing the round with the more eye-catching punches.

In the second round Herbert increased his work rate going to the head and body before dominating the third round behind a strong jab, snapping his fellow Nottingham fighter's head back on numerous occasions.

In the fourth round Carwyn threw many combinations including a five-punch assault which ended with a heavy right hand.

The judges scored the bout 40-36 in favour of the west Walian much to the delight of around 35 Herbert supporters who had made their way to Newport on a coach from Ceredigion.

“I appreciate everyone coming down to support me as it wasn't a short trek,” said Herbert. “I would like to thank my mother and sister for selling the tickets on my behalf along with my mother sorting out the bus.

“If more people want to come or I hit a similar number then I will get to fight in Wales two to three times a year which is something I would really like.

“Scriven is a very tough, game opponent so beating opposition such as him in only my second pro fight will stand me in good stead going forward.

“I have another bout lined up on 7 May and hope to be boxing back in Wales before the end of the year.”
