DESPITE the weather having another big say with a total of eight league and cup games postponed, there was action in the J Emrys Morgan Cup with holders CARDIGAN TOWN relieved to still be in the competition after scraping home 4-3 against league basement boys PENCADER in the Carmarthenshire village.

Conditions at Pencader Park were diabolical and for much of the 90 minutes it was a case of kick and chase with players having to contend with a high wind and pouring rain.

The conditions did not suit Town’s quality passing game but the Magpies adapted and it says a lot for them that they were able to come through a tricky assignment.

Cardigan went ahead in the opening minutes through pacey John Lumb who fired into the bottom corner after the spadework was done by Michael Diggle.

Craig Gordon put the Reds back on level terms when a free kick caught on the wind and eluded goalkeeper Casey Walters.

The visitors regained the advantage a few minutes before the break when midfielder Iestyn Evans, who was suffering from a chest infection, found the bottom corner.

Pencader netted twice against the wind early in the second half and after both sides netted from the penalty spot Town skipper Steve Blackford produced an exquisite pass to Dylan Davies who netted with aplomb. Davies turned in another first-rate showing and the 19-year-old unsung hero must surely be one of the most talented midfielders on the local circuit.

Costcutter League Division One leaders NEWCASTLE EMLYN pulled out the stops to gain a 3-1 away win over LLANRHYSTUD of the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League Division Two.

After Huw Jones fired the Reds ahead in the seventh minute visiting player/manager Steve Hicks saved a certain goal by handling on the line and was given his marching orders.

Anthony Didaldy netted from the resulting penalty to put the north Ceredigion side back on level terms.

Llanrhystud battled after the interval but had two players sent off for dangerous play and that handed the initiative to the visitors.

Prolific marksman Peter Almond did the trick for Emlyn and the dangerous front-runner made the tie safe with a second goal in the 70th minute.

LAMPETER TOWN appeared on the way out when trailing visitors TALYBONT by three goals after the opening 45 minutes.

But the North Road cup battlers who lifted the trophy two seasons ago staged a tremendous second half fightback to win 4-3 and reach the last 16.

As the mid county high-flyers took control Luke Lovell and Jason Jones netted two apiece to the delight of their team-mates and vociferous supporters.

DEWI STARS of the Second Division also reached the fourth round thanks to a 3-1 win over PENRHYNCOCH RESERVES at Llanddewi Brefi where Arwel Jones bagged a brace of goals and Dylan Jones was also on target.
