Costcutter Ceredigion Football League

THIRTY-FOUR years have elapsed since Bargod Rangers lifted the Division One title with very few successes since.

But there is a bit of a buzz in the Carmarthenshire village of Drefach Felindre with the Parc Puw outfit again a force to be reckoned with – after seven outings Rangers are perched on top of the league with the only unbeaten record.

One of the most highly-rated defenders to wear the blue shirt during the halcyon days and still a club stalwart Eifion Davies told the Tivy-Side “We’ve got a nice young team here playing quality stuff and hopefully we can have a successful season.”

The high-flyers can boast talented youngsters such as the league’s top marksman Robbie Jenkins and Dion Phillips. Skipper Sam Skinner leads by example at the heart of the defence, twin brothers Dan and Tom Evans from Pentrecwrt are also towers of strength at the back and at this stage of the season Rangers can call on Shaun Leonard in a midfield role. Normally a talented fullback with Newcastle Emlyn Rugby Club he is serving a lengthy ban which is benefitting Rangers.

As the homesters sprang a sixth win they led 3-1 at the break with Jenkins setting them on the way with a clinical finish, Leonard doubling the advantage and Dion Phillips hitting the third.

The same tempo continued during the second period with Rangers dominating and they scored further goals through Jenkins, Phillips, Steffan Evans and midfielder Jack Hewitt-Fisher.

A few miles further west there was an almost audible creak at NEWCASTLE EMLYN where the Reds suffered a second home defeat when beaten 3-2 by LAMPETER TOWN who had previously picked up only three points from five outings.

Dion Davies and Jake Harris were on target for Emlyn but front-runners Gethin Davies bagged a brace of goals for the visitors and midfielder James Gudgeon was also on the scoresheet.

LLANDYSUL, who have had three points deducted for fielding an ineligible player, won for the fourth time when emerging 5-1 winners over very disappointing visitors ST DOGMAELS.

As the Swallows held sway virtually throughout Dean Jones netted twice and there were also goals for Adrian Hazelby, Lewis Jones and Andrew Evans.

As NEW QUAY sprang a 4-3 win against ABERPORTH at Parcllyn central midfielder Marc Davies was twice on target and the other marksmen were front-runner Dave Evans skipper Carl Bourne.

ABERAERON Reserves hammered another coffin into the PENCADER relegation coffin with a 1-0 home win, the all-important goal netted by Jody Costello.
