THERE were shockwaves in the Costcutter Ceredigion Football League after reigning champions CARDIGAN TOWN were brushed aside 4-2 on their own patch by arch-rivals ST DOGMAELS.

Although the Magpies suffered defeat for the first time since season 2013-14 it was perhaps not such a big surprise, given that manager Seamus Doherty was forced to field a below-strength side due to the unavailability of a number of regulars.

And in another upset unbeaten leaders NEWCASTLE EMLYN crashed 4-1 against NEW QUAY who hitherto had lost four of their opening seven games and given little chance by most followers of taking maximum points from their visit to Parc Emlyn.

The latest results mean that St Dogmaels and Bargod Rangers are the only two in Division One not to taste defeat.

Saints dominated their clash with Cardigan virtually throughout, outplaying their neighbours and, but for over-exuberance in the final third of the pitch, could have won by a far wider margin.

It was essentially a first-rate team performance that carried the day for the north Pembrokeshire villagers but special mention should be made of Adam Williams. Normally a central midfielder, the youngster was used in a sweeping role and gave his skills a thorough airing.

Such was the visitors’ dominance that teenage goalkeeper Justin Smith had his most quiet afternoon of the season to date.

Last season’s leading marksman Trefor Woodgate turned provider for the first two Saints goals when crossing for former Town midfielder John Curran and vastly-experienced Ioan Owen to tap past ex-Saints goalkeeper Casey Walters.

The visitors increased their advantage after the break when Woodgate went past Michael Diggle and finished clinically.

With the points safely in the bag the Teifi Estuary high-flyers went four goals clear when super sub Steve Jerry Williams netted with his first touch after a mistake by Walters.

To their credit Town continued to compete for everything and pulled two goals back in the final five minutes, both netted by midfielder James Evans who was unavailable for the opening 45 minutes and came on as a second half substitute. One of his strikes came from the penalty spot.

NEW QUAY have hardly set the scene alight this term but that all changed when the Seasiders turned in a polished performance in subduing leaders EMLYN and there was nothing flattering about the 4-1 scoreline.

If it was a team effort that proved effective, mention should be made of Craig Richardson, the midfielder-cum-defender switching to a front-running role and giving the Emlyn defence a torrid time throughout.

Richardson fired the visitors ahead and fellow striker David Evans doubled the advantage before Peter Almond halved the deficit with a free kick.

As Quay continued to control the tempo of the game during the second period Richardson gave them breathing space with a real corker. The converted striker chested the ball down just outside the penalty area and in one movement lobbed the ball home, reminiscent of the much publicised Eric Cantona goal for Manchester United some years ago.

Ashley Butler hit a late fourth goal for the Seasiders who controlled matters until the final whistle.

FELINFACH completed the double over ABERPORTH in a fortnight when emerging 3-2 winners at home after coming out on top 4-3 at Parcllyn.

Aled Davies, Jamie Davies and Lee Forrester were on target for the Milkmen with John Midgley and Chris Jones replying.

CRANNOG and ABERAERON RESERVES shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Urdd Centre where George Cohen netted for the homesters and Huw Owens got Aeron’s goal.

BARGOD RANGERS took a break from league action and ran out 2-0 winners over at Second Division FFOSTRASOL in round one of the J Emrys Morgan Cup and in the same competition LAMPETER TOWN made the long trek to Powys pay off with a 7-2 win against MAESYRHANDIR.

In a Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies round one tie DEWI STARS went through after a 3-2 win over CILGERRAN ROVERS at Llanddewi Brefi while MAESGLAS reached the next stage with a 3-1 win at PENCADER.
