AFTER 60 years popular football competition the Bay Cup involving Costcutter Ceredigion League clubs could in future be played as a pre or early season competition with the semi-finals and final under floodlights at the end of September or early October.

Since the competition started in season 1954-55 the Bay Cup has traditionally been held towards the end of the season, the first round during March and the final one of the last games of the season in May.

But with numerous other cup tournaments successful clubs have been faced with fixture pile-ups and there is a view that moving the Bay Cup to the start of the season would help alleviate this.

Those in favour of switching the competition also argue that it would give a far more competitive start to a season.

But there is also a view that the tournament provides interest for clubs out of the various cup competitions and with no chance in the league giving them an extra edge towards the end of a long campaign.

The early season idea was previously put forward by St Dogmaels but rejected by clubs and now after further interest in switching the cup ties it is to be an agenda item at the league AGM at Ffostrasol on Tuesday, July 7 at 7.30pm.

League secretary Geraint Davies said: “This has come up in the past and it will be interesting to see the outcome of discussions at the AGM.”
