There were those who felt Division One leaders St Dogmaels could face a tough task at Lampeter’s North Road but Saints continued on the straight and narrow with a 2-0 win to lead on goal difference from neighbours Cardigan Town who sprang a 1-0 win over New Quay at King George V Playing Field.

As the top two maintained their one hundred per cent records champions Newcastle Emlyn dropped points for the first time when held 1-1 by Aberporth at Parcllyn.

Lampeter will no doubt rue two glaring misses during the second period but on the evidence of the 90 minutes the visitors were worthy winners.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes Lampeter nearly took the lead when a Steve Lovell effort rebounded from the crossbar straight to brother Luke who was left in a one-to-one situation with goalkeeper Justin Smith, the latter working wonders in denying the striker.

From Smith’s throw out to Craig Williams the ball was worked up the flank where a Dan Bellis cross was netted by John Curran to put the visitors in front.

As Saint began to dictate Lee Burrows, Trevor Woodgate and Sam Hall combined for the latter to double his side’s advantage and put the game beyond the homesters.

Cardigan kept to the straight and narrow with a 1-0 win over visitors New Quay but the Seasiders could consider themselves rather unfortunate not to get a share of the spoils after matching their opponents throughout.

Quay appeared set for a deserved point but with 18 minutes remaining brothers Dylan and Rhys Davies combined on the left before the ball was crossed to John Lumb who netted in style.

Aberporth followers felt their favourites could and should have inflicted the first defeat on champions Newcastle Emlyn but had to settle for a draw. The Airmen were presented with an opportunity to win the game when awarded a penalty but the normally hugely reliable spot-kick taker Johnny James saw his stab at the target from 12 yards rebound from the crossbar.

Maesglas opened their account at the fourth time of asking when emerging 5-3 winners over promoted Llanboidy at Maes Radley.

Attacking brightspark Jeremy Pendragon stole the limelight with a brilliant hat-trick and the other marksmen were Emyr Davies and Billy Myers.
