Boasting one hundred per cent records Cardigan Town and St Dogmaels are joint leaders on points after three games while champions Newcastle Emlyn who were engaged in the Welsh Cup on Saturday, have maximum points from two outings and Lampeter Town lost for the first time in going down at New Quay.

Understrength Cardigan had to work hard to overcome Bargod Rangers at Parc Puw before springing a 2-1 win in the final quarter.

The Magpies went into the game without James Evans, Steve Blackford, Kevin Morgan and Mike Diggle but such is the strength in depth at King George V Playing Field these days manager Seamus Doherty was able to select a more than useful side.

Rangers on the other hand included Newcastle Emlyn Rugby Club star Sean Leonard, Robbie Jenkins and Sam Skinner and ran their opponents close.

The visitors edged the first 45 minutes but failed to put their chances away and were denied by former Newcastle Emlyn goalkeeper Ollie Evans who pulled off a number of vital stops.

Town went ahead with 21 minutes remaining when the pacey John Lumb made ground down the flank before crossing to Aled Rees who netted with some aplomb.

Soon afterwards Rangers were awarded a penalty after Lumb was adjudged to have handled but the spot kick by Robbie Jenkins was saved by ex-St Dogmaels custodian Casey Walters.

The Drefach Felindre men were made to pay for the miss when Lumb again set up Rees to double his side’s advantage and a late goal by Daniel Gough for the homesters was no more than academical.

St Dogmaels are just in front of their arch-rivals on goal difference, the Teifi Estuary villagers springing a 3-1 away win over promoted Felinfach.

After serving a lengthy suspension imposed by the Central Wales FA last term, which continued into this term influential and highly-respected former player and manager Steve ‘Jerry’ Williams is back in harness with Saints and is committed to bringing on a number of exciting youngsters at the club.

Williams takes over for a tricky assignment at Lampeter this coming Saturday and is sure to have the full support of a strong squad.
