A local young sailor is celebrating selection for the Great Britain sailing team that will travel to an international sailing event in Ireland.

Tom Renny, aged 13, will be sailing at the Irish National Topper Championships in Waterford at the beginning of July. He will be one of a squad of eight under 15 year olds selected from across the UK.

Tom, who lives in Moylegrove, learned to sail at Teifi Boat Club in Cardigan, and also sails at Fishguard Bay Yacht Club.

The Ysgol y Preseli pupil is a member of the Welsh Topper Sailing Squad and the GBR Topper Sailing Squad, which involves travelling for training at sailing venues across the UK.

Earlier this year, he retained his title of Welsh Topper Sailing champion at the Welsh Youth Sailing Competition in Pwllheli, North Wales.

Tom’s mum Sheila said: “We’re very proud of how well Tom has done with his sailing. He puts a huge amount of work into it, and it’s good to see this is being rewarded with some good results. We’re also very grateful for the training and support he has received from Ian Carswell and other volunteers who run Youth Training at Teifi Boat Club.”
