CRYMYCH schoolboy Garan Croft won his third successive Welsh schoolboy title when he was awarded a split decision over Bridgend’s Jimmy Gilheaney following an epic final at the Mond Club in Clydach on Saturday.
Although Gilhearney pressed from the opening bell and clearly threw the most punches, the more accurate shots came from his 12-year-old Cardigan opponent who, boxing superbly behind a tight guard, capitalised on his superior fitness to snatch a hard-earned victory.
Victory went some way to easing the disappointment of the previous week’s semi-final defeat of Garan’s twin brother Ioan who – in his 13th contest – had his unbeaten run ended by old rival Jamie Janes, of Splott.
Cardigan felt they should have won a second national title at Clydach, but Peter Price was controversially adjudged the narrow loser of his Youth final against British champion Sam Parry (Gilfach Goch ABC) which proved an extremely technical and high class contest.
