Maesglas hold the record of being the only club to successfully defend the J Emrys Morgan Cup when they did the trick back in 1988 with victory over Berriew and are on course to capture the trophy for a third time after reaching the last eight with a 2-0 win over Powys village club Llangedwyn at Maes Radley.

The JT Hughes Montgomeryshire Amateur League Division One villagers from the Tanat Valley near the border, who lifted the trophy in season 1989-90, won on penalties at home against Cardigan Town in the second round and sprang a 6-4 win over Bargod Rangers at Parc Puw in the previous round.

It was hardly surprising that the visitors had high hopes of completing a hat-trick of wins at the expense of Costcutter League clubs but in the event came up against a full-of-fight Maesglas who deservedly booked their passage.

Indeed had it not been for the agility of teenage Llangedwyn goalkeeper Harry Lloyd the Blues would have been home and dry long before the second goal midway through the second period.

Leading marksman Ashley Summers with a typical poacher’s goal put the homesters ahead seven minutes before the break and the visitors never looked like getting back on level terms.

Ricky Woods Holmes with a long range effort that left Lloyd rooted to the spot doubled the advantage and that was that.
