Cardigan went down to a seventh defeat in Division Three West as they lost 22-20 against visitors Pontarddulais who completed a double over their rivals having come out on top at Coedbach Park on the opening day of the campaign.

With football and rugby fixtures across the region being abandoned due to the wet weather the King George V Playing Field strip was playable.

There was a time when the Cardigan pitch, which is on the site of the former town refuse dump, had an unwanted reputation as one of the boggiest in West Wales – in one game a player lost a boot in thick mud and clay and it was never found.

But there has been a huge turnaround thanks to hard work behind the scenes with local farmers and others doing great work in making the playing area one of the best around.

Although the sides were fairly evenly matched the visitors were slicker behind the scrum and but for the heavy underfoot conditions would have won by a wider margin. As it was at the end of an intriguing contest Llyr Griffiths and Co were grateful for a losing bonus point.

The Bont went ahead in the opening quarter when centre Gwyn Davies scythed through for a try converted by right-winger Gary Williams.

Cardigan replied with a penalty by outside half Iestyn Crompton but the visitors led 12-3 at the interval after Gary Williams outstripped the defence for a try.

Following a handbags at dawn incident both sides were reduced to 13 players at the start of the second period and this was when home fullback James Russell, on permit from Narberth, ran in for a try.

Right-winger Rhydian Jenkins followed suit for the homesters will a well-worked score and the Cardis were ahead before Bont left-winger Steffan Williams crossed for a try converted by his namesake.

Cardigan appeared to have pinched the verdict when scrum-half Llyr Tobias nipped in for a try on the hour but centre Jonathan Lloyd landed a penalty to regain the lead for the visitors and despite the Cardis going close near the end they couldn’t quite make up the leeway.
