Youngsters in Fishguard and Goodwick can now get their skates on - thanks to a sports grant scheme.

Pupils at Ysgol Bro Gwaun - as well as other young people in the area – are benefitting from a brand new set of rollerblading equipment.

The school’s 5x60 team and Fishguard and Goodwick Youth Club put together a joint Community Chest bid to buy 30 sets of rollerblades, and safety equipment.

The project was the idea of school staff member Eiry Miles, herself a rollerblade enthusiast.

The blades will now be used in PE lessons, community drop-in sessions as well as special roller discos at Fishguard Leisure Centre.

They will also be used in the after-school 5x60 sessions after the Christmas break.

5x60 Officer Dan Bellis said: ‘The rollerblades will be a fantastic resource for pupils and will hopefully enthuse those youngsters who are not interested in more mainstream sports.”

Community Youth Worker Steve Lewis said young people in the community were very excited about the project.

“The rollerblades will provide young people with the opportunity to do something positive with their leisure time. A lot of people take up rollerblading because it is fun, but it also has huge fitness benefits.”

5x60 is a Sport Wales initiative designed to encourage more young people to participate in sport and physical activity and is managed in Pembrokeshire by Sport Pembrokeshire.
