Cardigan takes on Europe

SEVEN of the best chess players from Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire will be representing Cardigan in Rhodes, Greece in the European Chess Club Cup on October 19.
Following their triumph in last season's Welsh Premier League, seeing off such rivals as Cardiff and Newport, Gwent, the team of six men and one woman will be taking on the best in Europe for the title of Champions.
Iolo Jones, aged 66 of Pontcarreg, retired Environmental Engineer and team captain will be leading his side to the European Finals for the first time in his 50 years of playing for the Cardigan club.
When asked how he felt to be playing the best in Europe, he said: “There are 52 teams in the competition and we are seeded 52nd. If we finish anything other than bottom, I will regard it as a great triumph.”
The players have taken a few weeks out of their lives and a few pounds from their savings to fund this adventure and to represent Cardigan on the European stage. Iolo's team are Gerry Heap, Rudy and Julie van Kemenade, Tony Haigh, Dr. John Miller and Colin Denham.
Cardigan Chess Club meets every Thursday at 7.30pm at Cardigan Bowls Club and plays regularly in both the Dyfed and Welsh Premier League. Anyone with any interest in Chess is welcome to come along, or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
