HAVERFORDWEST’s annual chartered fair will return to town at the start of October.

Portfield Fair, which has been held in Pembrokeshire’s county town until time immemorial, returns on Wednesday, October 3 at 6pm.

The ceremonial opening of the fair follows a series of traditions.

The ceremony will begin at Haverfordwest Town Council’s offices at Picton Place, with a parade heading toward the Scotchwell car park for the opening of the fair.

The Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain South Wales and Northern Ireland Section, which operates the fair, will preside over the opening.

The common crier of Haverfordwest will read the fair’s ancient charter in the presence of the town mayor, Cllr Sue Murray.

In the last few years, there has been a lot of discussion about moving the fair from its current location to another place in the town.

Members of the showmen’s guild have spoken fondly about when the fair used to be held on St Thomas’ Green.

There are continuing discussions about the future location of the fair.

After the opening ceremony, there will be refreshments at the Services Club on Quay Street.

To join the procession for Portfield Fair, meeting at Picton House, 2 Picton Place, from 5.30pm on Wednesday, October 3.
