A HAVERFORDWEST man, who fought for his life after a late night assault, has spoken about the “humbling and generous donations” from a crowdfunding campaign.

Kristian Speake was taken to The University Hospital of Wales following an assault in Haverfordwest on February 10, and his close family have spent as much of their time in Cardiff to be close to him.

Calum MacDougall, a friend of Mr Speake’s, set up a JustGiving page with the aim of raising £1,000 which will contribute towards the family’s travel and accommodation costs as they stay in Cardiff.

To date, an astonishing £10,845 has been contributed.

Mr Speake's football team Haverfordwest County also gave their support for the JustGiving page.

The club said thoughts and prayers of players and members were with Mr Speake and his family.

Posting on Facebook on Wednesday, April 18, Kristian thanked everyone for their “humbling and generous donations,” thanking Calum MacDougall through a “massive shout-out”.

He added: “It means a lot and it has already helped with day-to-day costs.

“I am extremely grateful and overwhelmed with the support and generosity. The support/visitors/messages I believe has helped my recovery because you have all been so positive.”

Kristian stated he was “on the mend,” following brain surgery, two eye operations, and now waiting for a titanium plate to be fitted in the right side of his head.

“Slight delay with that at the moment because I have MRSA/staph infection.

“I am now at the neuro rehab ward, after seven weeks in the Heath.

“The critical care ward at the Heath were tremendous, I have so much gratitude for them helping me pull through; lastly, another acknowledgement of all you that have visited, sent messages and donated; you are all easing the pain.”

Police arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of GBH following the incident on Priory Lane, who was subsequently released on police bail.
