ANTI-war campaigners are planning a protest in Haverfordwest this Saturday (April 21), following the UK's involvement in air strikes over Syria.

On Friday, UK, the US and France hit sites near Damascus and Homs, in response to an alleged chemical attack on Douma on April 7.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said it was "legally and morally right" for the UK to join air strikes against the Syrian regime to prevent "further human suffering", telling MPs there was "clear evidence" the Assad government was behind the Douma chemical weapons attack.

But the decision has caused uproar with many in Pembrokeshire.

Campaigners say the decision should have been subject to a vote in Parliament.

Legally, UK prime ministers do not need Parliament approval before launching military action, although they have done so since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Following calls online for action, Pembrokeshire Stop the War group has taken swift steps to organise a demonstration.

A meeting will take place this Wednesday (April 18) in Haverfordwest, at 7pm in the Spitfire Museum at the rear of the former Ocky White building in Haverfordwest.

A march and rally are also set to take place this Saturday at 1pm in Haverfordwest.

A spokesman from Stop the War said it was "vital people get out on to the streets and demonstrate".

"We strongly condemn the missile attacks on Syria on Friday which will have only brought the Syrians more misery and destruction," he said.

"They will have done nothing to end the war or alleviate their suffering.

"The overwhelming majority of people in this country oppose this action just as they have opposed the series of wars of the last 17 years."
