CONCERNS were raised about the state of the public toilets at Haverfordwest’s multi-story car park as the town council reconvened after their summer of ceremonial duties.

Town mayor, Councillor Alan Buckfield said the council had received complaints throughout the summer season that toilets in the Riverside multi-story car park were locked at times when they should have been open, and were often unclean.

The toilets, which are owned by Pembrokeshire County Council, are cleaned and maintained by private contractor Danfo.

Speaking on behalf of the county council, head of highways Darren Thomas admitted there were issues with the toilets and the car park, but said: “There is a design for it to be renovated but it is linked with a multi-story refurbishment scheme.”

Mr Thomas added the scheme was currently undergoing consultation, and in the meantime town councillors could tell him about any complaints they received about the state of the toilets to pass on to Danfo.

Town councillors were also urged to attend more local events, following criticism that some had not responded to invitations they had been sent.

Town Sherriff Cllr Gillian Howell said: “Some people may not feel very comfortable going to a chapel or church.

“But you are there to represent your ward – recognise it is part of our function that that is what we are supposed to do is represent our areas at certain events.”

But deputy mayor Cllr Sue Murray said: “People need to realise we have lives apart from being councillors – and we are volunteers.”

Councillors also received feedback from the mayor’s visit to Haverfordwest’s twin town Oberkirch at the end of August.

“They were absolutely a credit to themselves and to the town,” said Cllr Buckfield, who added a lot could be learned from German hospitality.

He also said there was more reason to encourage children to visit Oberkirch due to plans to teach German when Tasker Milward and Sir Thomas Picton school merge.
