FOURTEEN teams took to the water of Llysyfran Reservoir yesterday (Sunday) to contest the Welsh Dragon Boat Championship.

And a close-run final saw The Eagle finally land the winner's trophy.

The Narberth pub's team, Full Bore, beat off the challenge from arch-rivals The Hill Billies, from Narberth rugby club, to cross the finishing line in under one minute.

The Eagle pulled out their finest power and perfect paddling rhythm and were jubilant to pip The Hill Billies to the post, after coming runner-up to them in the past three years.

Valero Vikings claimed third place in the final, which was the culmination of a day's racing and lots of land-based entertainment at Llysyfran Country Park, held in ideal weather conditions.

The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland and is set to raise thousands of pounds for mental health charities as well as Rotary causes.

Said event co-ordinator Ken Morgan: "This event could not have been held without the support of these magnificent teams and the majors sponsors, Hywel Griffiths & Sons, The bouncy castles were sponsored by Care In Hand; the magician by Folly Farm and the kids' mini disco by Rushacre Garage Ltd."

He also thanked his committee for all their hard work leading up to the event and Narberth and Whitland Round Table who loaned their showground trailer which was used as the control centre.

Club president Mary Adams added her thanks to all these, as well as The Race The Dragon organisation, for making the day so memorable.
