IN a bid to reduce admissions to hospital a newly refurbished and relocated Medical Day Unit is now open at Withybush Hospital.

The health board said the unit will to provide “patients and staff with a much improved, permanent facility”.

It will also allow greater capacity for treatment.

The purpose of the unit is to provide day case medical care to Pembrokeshire patients, five days a week, “preventing hospital admission and enabling patients to maintain personal and/or work commitments”.

Some treatments available were previously provided a tertiary centres, requiring patients to travel long distances, such as infusion therapies, radiological procedures, respiratory treatments/procedures and endocrinology tests.

Hywel Dda Health Board chairman Bernardine Rees said: “It’s wonderful that our patients can start using this modern facility from May 23. It has been designed with comfort and relaxation in mind whilst providing an environment that caters for the needs of patients using the service.”
