A St Davids man offered his drugs to police in the hope of gaining a lift home, a court has heard.

John Eaton, 34, of Llys Dewi, pleaded guilty to possession of 0.5g of cannabis when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates last Tuesday.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, described the circumstances as ‘bizarre’, and told the court that a police officer had been carrying out routine enquiries in Haverfordwest on February 10, when Eaton approached.

“He went back to his car and was about to close the door when the defendant, who was standing on the pavement, put his hand through the door stopping the officer from closing it.”

The officer immediately recognised the wrap of cannabis in Eaton’s hand, and found a cannabis grinder when he searched him.

Eaton stated he had paid £10 for the Class B drug and intended to smoke it. He added that he had missed the bus back to St Davids and needed to get home to take his insulin.

Mr Pritchard-Jones added: “He gave the officer the drug to get arrested, presumably hoping that the police would have given him a lift or arranged for insulin to be brought to him.”

The court heard that Eaton had a previous conviction for a drugs matter Mark Layton, defending, told the bench that Eaton had only been in possession of a small amount of cannabis.

Magistrates imposed a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £20 surcharge. A destruction order was made for the seized drugs.
