Pembrokeshire residents wishing to stand as a Councillor in the forthcoming local government elections can find out more about the role in a unique open evening in March.

Pembrokeshire County Council is hosting a ‘Be a Councillor’ open evening on Monday, March 6th at County Hall led by current Council leader Councillor Jamie Adams and Chief Executive, Ian Westley.

The two-hour event starts at 4pm.

Cllr Adams and Mr Westley will discuss the work of the authority, the challenges it faces, and its corporate priorities.

The evening will offer the opportunity for people to explore the role of a Councillor, their work and responsibilities, how the Council works, its governance arrangements and how decisions are made.

There will be information provided on the challenges faced due to austerity, transformation, and regional working.

The event is open to everyone, and will be especially informative for people interested in becoming a Councillor.

There will also be an opportunity to take a tour of the Council Chamber and the members’ room in County Hall.

“The role of a County Councillor is one for people who care about their community, who are prepared to make challenging decisions and who would like to see things being done,” said the Authority’s leader Councillor Jamie Adams.

“Being a Councillor is more varied than many people imagine and condensing it down into a two hour session will be challenging.

“However, this event will provide an overview of what the role entails and I’d encourage anyone considering standing as a Councillor in May to come along and find out more,”

Attendees will also be able to take a tour of stands, which will provide information on Finance and Governance, Social Care & Education, Public Protection and Highways, Democratic Services, Scrutiny, and Elections.

These stands will offer advice and information on the support available to Councillors, remuneration, ICT provision, the functions and responsibilities of Council departments, and the election/nominations process.
