A plan to build off-grid, sustainable accommodation at a north Pembrokeshire eco village has come a step closer after a crowd-funding appeal smashed it's £5,000 target.

Lammas Eco Village, near Glandwr, attracts hundreds of visitors each year and also hosts dozens of volunteers, all wanting to experience the sustainable Lammas lifestyle.

At the moment overnight volunteers have no option but to camp in the village. However that will soon change thanks to the Lishmans, one of eight families who live in low-impact smallholdings at Lammas.

The Lishmans want to build a four bed eco-pod that visitors to Lammas could book online. They have developed the design after constructing a similar structure for their oldest son, Ted.

"We have been told many times that people would really love to stay in an eco-building here," said Cassie Lishman. "So we'd love to create some visitor's spaces and offer it out for everyone to enjoy. "

The eco-pod will offer a total low impact experience in a small self-contained unit, completely off grid. The pod will be built using local slate, straw bales, lime plaster and local wood.

It will have solar electricity, and a wood burner and will use passive solar gain to bring in the sun's warmth.

It is estimated that the pod will cost £5,000 to build. A crowd-funding page set up last month reached the initial target of £3,000 with 11 days still to run. On Monday, with hours left until donations closed, it had smashed the stretch target of £5,000.

This means that the eco pod will be built by late autumn this year, with bookings being taken for spring 2018.

"A huge thank you to our crowd," said Cassie. "We have overfunded our stretch target, which means we will be able to complete an Eco-pod by late autumn."
