Cocaine found in shorts

9:12am Tuesday 28th August 2001

A RECORD amount of crack cocaine has been found by Bromley police in a 20-year-old man's boxer shorts.

The stash of crack and heroin was uncovered when police strip-searched Peter Deighan, of Spa Hill, Upper Norwood.

The total street value is £675, and the 13 rocks of crack formed the largest haul of the drug ever seized by police in Bromley. Police believe the relatively low value of the record stash indicates Bromley does not have a crack problem.

Deighan was arrested for cannabis possession in Seymore Villas, Penge, on August 8, and taken to Orpington police station where a strip search was authorised.

Officers found 27 small packets 14 black ones containing crack and 13 white ones containing heroin concealed in his boxer shorts.

They do not know whether the drugs were destined for users in the borough

Detective Constable Neil Harding said: “This arrest was part of Operation Geneva and obviously we are pleased to get these drugs off the streets.

“It is a large amount given the average user would get through one or two rocks a day.

“But the fact this is our biggest ever seizure shows there is no crack problem in Bromley.”

Deighan entered no plea at Bromley Magistrates' Court on August 14, with regard to four counts of possessing controlled drugs and two counts of possession with intent to supply. He will be tried at Croydon Crown Court.
