PLAID Cymru may have scored two major upsets in Cardigan in the county elections by unseating two Independent councillors of long standing - but the party failed in its bid to win overall control of Ceredigion.
Plaid has 19 seats on the new council, compared to 16 last time; the Independents have 11 (16 last time); the Liberal Democrats won 10 seats (nine); Labour retained its one seat and there is one other'.
Two Independent members of the last Cabinet lost their seats - Mair Morris, Cardigan, who held the social services portfolio; and Emlyn Thomas, Aberaeron, who was responsible for education. Chairman of the council Fred Williams (Lib-Dem) was also beaten, as was Penri James, who is Plaid Cymru's prospective parliamentary candidate.
