Plaid Cymru Leadership contender Elin Jones has welcomed the endorsement of Simon Thomas who, in a joint press conference with the Ceredigion AM, announced his withdrawal from the contest and his backing of Elin Jones’ bid.
Ms Jones said it was time a new generation of Plaid Cymru politicians were given a mandate to lead the party and that she would lead a team of all the talents.
Speaking from the Senedd today, Ms Jones said: “I am delighted to have Simon’s endorsement and very much value his support for my bid. It is time for a new generation of leaders, a time for the party to renew and reinvigorate and look forward to the challenge of leading our nation into the future.
“I have said from the outset, that it is my aim to lead a team of all the talents. If elected as the next leader of Plaid Cymru I want the best talent the party has to offer. We need out top talent, at the top of their game to remove this lacklustre Labour administration so we can get on with the job of building a prosperous and sustainable nation.
“My intention in seeking to lead Plaid Cymru was always to build and effective team. I have now secured a Deputy for that team. I will be starting this three week hustings period with Simon’s support and a clear vision to take this Party forward.
“Our vision for Plaid Cymru is identical. We want to turn Plaid into a modern, 21st century political party, providing the only credible challenge to Labour in Wales. We want to see Plaid Cymru govern Wales again and ultimately ensure its transformation into a successful, sustainable, independent country. Our political ambition is bold and radical, but it is also relevant to people’s everyday lives and hopes.
“We are offering Plaid Cymru members a chance to vote for a new generation of leadership, with a strong Leader and a strong Team”.
