Plaid Cymru's Hazel Evans has been elected for the Cenarth Ward of Carmarthenshire County Council. Mrs. Evans, a Town Councillor for over twenty years, defeated Conservative candidate Henrietta Hensher by 638 votes to 141, securing 82% of the vote.

Councillor Hazel Evans said: “I would like to thank the electors of the Cenarth ward for the faith they have shown in me by electing me as their County Councillor. I cannot think of a greater honour than representing the communities of Cenarth, Capel Iwan and Newcastle Emlyn. I will champion our communities and promise to always put them first for as long as the people have faith in me.”

Cllr. Peter Hughes-Girffiths, leader of the Plaid Cymru Group on the County Council group said: “This is an excellent result for the communities in the Cenarth ward and for Carmarthenshire County Council as a whole. Cllr. Hazel Evans has a wealth of experience that will enable her to make a real difference to the area. With a few more wins like this at the 2012 elections, Plaid Cymru will be able to bring decent local government back to Carmarthenshire.”

Jonathan Edwards MP said “Hazel has worked selflessly for many years on behalf of the communities in the Teifi Valley. Her election is a thank you from the countless people she has helped and is a total rejection of the Conservative party in Carmarthenshire. Hazel will be a great asset in the County Council”.

Rhodri Glyn Thomas concluded: “I’m extremely pleased for Hazel on gaining such a large mandate from the communities of the Cenarth ward. The result is a testament to years of voluntary work in the area and sends a clear message to the Independent-Labour run council. I look forward to working with Hazel for the benefit of the whole of the Teifi Valley.”
