Hydro for all

A small grant has made it possible to offer subsidised hydro studies locally to help communities replace fossil fuels with electricity from streams and rivers.

Cilgwyn Community Group, which has secured the grant from Environment Wales, is interested to hear from anyone who would like to develop their stream to produce electricity.

Cilgwyn is one of several neighbourhoods in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion helping to make the transition towards a low carbon and greener future. The group are seeking to replace fossil fuels with renewables and have two wind turbines and some hydro and solar electric serving single households and groups of homes.

“We don’t have very much hydro potential here.” says Vicky Moller speaking for the group. “We are constituted to help neighbouring communities, so we are offering to support anyone with more potential than we have to develop their hydro power. Our aim is to get a decent amount of hydro electricity replacing fossil fuels with this grant.”

The grant is for a feasibility study into hydro electricity. The group are offering help with assessing the potential of streams and rivers, costing the equipment and work to harvest it, accessing capital investment and liaising with the environment agency and electricity suppliers.
