Plaid Cymru’s Elin Jones AM has welcomed the publication of new planning guidance by the Assembly Government which will facilitate development in rural communities.
The Ceredigion AM was speaking after she jointly-launched the new Technical Advice Note 6 (TAN6) with the Planning Minister, Jane Davidson AM, at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show.
TAN6 will relax rules which govern the development of new buildings in the countryside and make it easier for businesses to establish or expand in rural communities while also helping retain young, skilled workers in their native areas by facilitating the construction of affordable homes.
Commenting on the new guidance, Ceredigion’s Elin Jones AM said: “I’ve long supported calls to reform the planning process to make it easier for rural businesses to develop and to provide homes for our young people who want to remain in their native communities. I’m therefore very pleased that the Assembly Government has been able to deliver on its One Wales commitment in this respect”.
The new guidance will also make it easier for farmers to construct a second home on their land so that they can retire and transfer the business to a younger member of the family.
Elin Jones AM added: “It’s also essential that we ensure that our young farmers are given every opportunity to enter the profession. I therefore welcome the fact that TAN6 will facilitate this by making it easier to construct a second dwelling on farms so that these young farmers can take over the running of the family business.
“Local planning authorities are expected to take TAN6 guidance into account immediately and I hope that we will start seeing the benefits of these new guidelines as soon as possible”.
