Fortnightly rubbish collections could start across Ceredigion this autumn.
Members of Ceredigion’s Cabinet were told last week that the new waste collection scheme could begin in November.
It will involve weekly collections of food waste and material for recycling, while collections of the black sacks for all residual waste will be made once every two weeks, said Huw Morgan, director of highways, property and works.
He added that extra funding provided by the Welsh Assembly this year will be used to buy new vehicles suitable for use with the new system.
Ceredigion is working in partnership with Powys County Council to develop the new scheme.
Mr Morgan said the partnership is “progressing” with its procurement of long-term food waste treatment and this is unlikely to be ready before 2013. He added that tenders are currently being sought for treatment of food waste in the interim.
“The sooner we get on with this the better,” he said. “It will save the council considerable costs on landfill for a start and this is an important part of our drive towards zero waste.”
He added that a “programme of education” for the public about the new system will be devised in time for the autumn launch.

Love the Councils for their work on green issues. Zero Carbon footprint, eco friendly!!! Its all great! But just a little information for you on the subject. (This is national not just regional) All councils rund a tip, or recylcling centre. This is where all rubbish goes for sorting and processing. (May I point out, the only council service that is open 7 days a week and quite long hours too) Anyway, they love to take all rubbish, why? Well, they sort it process it, send very little to landfill, so what happens to the rest of it? They sell it! YES you heard right, they sell it, it gets exported around the world where it can be recylced in other countries (Burnt in power stations, melted to make plastic, ect ect) Now this may not come as such a big surprise to some, but Im sure others will be rather surprised!! This is why the goverment has mentioned on one or two occasions that householders should get a refund on their council tax for homes sorting out their bins. The more we sort it for them the less they have to do it and they make more profit on it! Good stuff eh?? And we all do our bit for the environment!!! (FYI, rubbish is shipped to Poland, Russia, And most parts of ASIA, let them burn it, at least its not us!!)
