Ceredigion’s Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams has welcomed the announcement that scallop dredging will be restricted in Cardigan Bay.
Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones AM today announced the new restrictions, which will include: • From 2011, shortening the length of the open season by one month (i.e. scallop fishing will be prohibited between 1 May - 31 October each year) • Prohibiting dredging for scallops in the 0-1 nautical mile area all around the Welsh coast • A prohibition of dredging for scallops in certain areas which have been identified as important to vulnerable marine species and habitats.
• A restriction on the numbers of dredges allowed in Welsh waters • A limit on the maximum vessel engine power Commenting, Mark Williams said: “Many people in Cardigan Bay have been concerned at the effect that dredging is having, so I am pleased that the Minister has put forward these proposals.
“I have always maintained that this must be carried out on the basis of the scientific evidence available, so it is welcome that areas not covered are to be assessed and kept under review.
“It is vital that we strike a balance between sustainable fishing and the protection of marine habitats, and I hope this order will achieve that.”
