Nick Bourne, Welsh Conservative Assembly Member for Mid & West Wales and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, today expressed his concern that the Assembly Government has ruled out help for Cardigan Bay’s scallop fishermen.
Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones, has extended the closed season on scallop fishing until 28 February 2010 but claims she has no fund available to offer compensation to scallop fishermen affected by the ban.
Nick Bourne said: “I am concerned by the Minister’s refusal to help Cardigan Bay’s scallop fishermen affected by the ban which she has imposed.
This decision will cause genuine hardship and presents a significant threat to the livelihoods of many involved in this industry.
