A chance to play a game of Nine Men’s Morris hidden for nearly 900 years is on offer at the opening evening of an archaeological dig on Wednesday July 8th.
There’s also the opportunity to see a 12th century tower unearthed in the on-going excavation at the site of Nevern Castle, in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Nevern Community Council has organised the open evening at 7pm so that archaeologists can explain their findings.
The council owns the site – which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument – and members are working with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Dyfed Archaeological Trust and Dr Chris Caple, of Durham University, on the excavation.
At 7pm on Wednesday Dr Caple will give a presentation on the findings and there will be a chance to see the trenches and chat to those involved.
Hedydd Lloyd, Chairman of Nevern Castle Group, said: "Since the dig started on June 15th we’ve already had a lot of interest and we’ve had some schoolchildren visiting the site to check on progress.
"The open evening gives people the chance to find out in more detail what we’ve uncovered and learn about how we want to explain the site to visitors in future.
Anyone is welcome on Wednesday - just come to the site in Nevern for 7pm."
The dig runs until Friday July 10th. The team has uncovered a wall of the 12th century castle built by The Lord Rhys and the remains of a massive masonry tower on the top of the Motte (a large earth and stone mound).
The project is funded by Cadw, through the Welsh Assembly Government’s £2m Welsh Cultural Heritage Initiative.
For information about the dig, call Community Liaison Archaeologist Richard Jones on 07814 526757 or 01558 823121.
