Elin Jones AM, Rural Affairs Minster discussed the new changes to tackle illegal fishing in Wales yesterday. The Minister saw first hand the capabilities in Environment Agency Wales' new boats designed to catch and deter illegal fishermen first hand.
Salmon and sewin (sea trout) stocks are under threat from a variety of sources. They are vital to the economy, ecology and for fishermen in Wales. One threat is the illegal fishing and taking of these iconic fish from our rivers.
Following an extensive review in 2007, the ways and means of tackling illegal fishing on Welsh rivers has undergone a transformation. New laws and intelligence-led tactics are being used to catch the poachers and protect important fish stocks.
