Plaid Cymru win in Ceredigion Results from last week’s European Election in Ceredigion have shown that voters continue to trust and support Plaid Cymru.
The result of the ballot held on Thursday, 04 June 2009 – which was announced yesterday (Sunday) – showed that Plaid Cymru polled 35 per cent of the votes cast in Ceredigion. This was nearly double the 19 per cent share of the vote won by the Liberal Democrats, who faced a strong challenge from the Conservatives who received 15 per cent.
On the European Election results, Plaid Cymru’s AM for Ceredigion, Elin Jones, said: "I’m very pleased that Ceredigion voters have once again placed their trust in Plaid Cymru as the party best placed to represent them. This is a very strong result for Plaid Cymru in Ceredigion and the party is now in pole position to recapture Ceredigion at the forthcoming General Election – especially since we polled nearly twice the votes the LibDems received.
"Nationally, Plaid Cymru’s vote increased by one per cent and I congratulate Jill Evans on her re-election as a MEP. I am now looking forward to co-operating with Jill so that she can continue her work on a European level on behalf of Ceredigion voters, which include campaigning against the introduction of electronic tagging, improving the rights of workers, tackling climate change and ensuring a viable future for the fishing industry".
In line with Plaid Cymru’s own polling prior to the election, a resurgent Conservative party is now challenging the Liberal Democrats for the second place in Ceredigion.
The LibDem result will also be a personal disappointment for their local MP who fronted their European Election campaign in Ceredigion.
