At the first of their four-times-a-year Beach Clean for the Marine Conservation Society, Cardigan Soroptimists picked up 15.5 kilos of litter over a 100m square stretch from the dunes to the tideline. Every item is measured and recorded in the minutest detail for the MCS database.
Soroptimists and The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) applaud a recent announcement by Jane Davidson, Wales Assembly Government Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, for a voluntary 50% reduction in plastic bags, and plans to impose a levy should this target not be reached by spring 2009. Plastic has been recorded as a cause of entanglement of many marine animals.
